A question I get asked often by Zimbabweans in the diaspora is whether investing back home is actually possible without being there in person. The short answer is yes, but the more honest answer is that it depends on how you do it.

What I have noticed over the past few years is that the infrastructure for diaspora investment has matured in meaningful ways. There are now legal frameworks written with non-resident investors in mind. There are platforms that verify businesses before they can raise capital. There are escrow services that hold your money until agreed milestones are met. The Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency has a dedicated diaspora desk that can walk you through the licensing process from wherever you are in the world.

The accessible entry points are SME investment through verified platforms, residential property purchase with remote conveyancing, the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange through licensed stockbrokers, and government securities. Minimums start around USD 100 for stocks and USD 1,000 for SME equity. The key is working with the right people — a ZIDA-registered lawyer, a licensed stockbroker, an escrow service, and an accountant who understands diaspora tax obligations.

Why Invest in Zimbabwe Right Now The Zimbabwean economy is opening up. The administration has signalled a pro-business stance, the currency reforms are slowly stabilising, and there is significant unmet demand for goods and services. For diaspora investors, this means opportunities in agriculture, real estate, logistics, tech, and manufacturing.

The biggest advantage you have is foreign currency. In a multi-currency economy, USD makes you a preferred partner, landlord, and customer.

SME Investment: The Most Accessible Path The easiest way to start is by investing in an existing SME. Radbit's platform connects diaspora investors with verified Zimbabwean businesses seeking capital. You can invest as little as USD 1,000 and get regular reporting, dividends, and even board observation rights depending on the deal size.

The key is verification. You need to know the business is real, the founders are credible, and your money is protected. Radbit's Trust Seal and escrow services handle this — I cover escrow in detail later.

Property Investment: What Has Changed Buying property from abroad is easier now than it was five years ago. The deeds office has digitised many records, and you can engage a property lawyer remotely. The process is:

Find a property through an agent or directly
Engage a Zimbabwean lawyer to handle due diligence
Sign a sale agreement via Docusign or equivalent
Transfer funds through a licensed bureau de change or bank
Your lawyer registers the transfer at the deeds office

The costs are roughly 8 percent of the purchase price — 3 percent transfer duty, 2 percent legal fees, and 2 percent agency fees. Rental yields in Harare range from 6 to 12 percent depending on location and property type.

Stock Market: ZSE for Diaspora The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange allows diaspora investors to open accounts through stockbroking firms. You need a ZIMRA tax clearance certificate, proof of identity, and proof of address. Minimum account funding is set by each stockbroking firm — confirm the current minimum with your chosen broker.

The ZSE has performed well in USD terms over the past two years, with many counters paying dividends. Liquidity is improving but still not at emerging market levels.

Government Bonds and Treasury Bills The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe issues treasury bills and bonds open to diaspora investors. Returns have at times been high in local currency, but they vary by instrument and holding period — but the currency risk is real. Only invest what you can afford to lose.

The Legal Framework The Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency handles investment licensing. Most sectors are open to foreign investment up to 100 percent. Some sectors like agriculture and mining have specific requirements. ZIDA has a diaspora desk that can guide you through the process.

You do not need to be a Zimbabwean citizen to invest. Permanent residents and foreign nationals can own businesses and property in Zimbabwe.

Protecting Your Investment This is the most important section. Always use a lawyer. Always verify the business or property before sending money. Use escrow services for large transactions. Never send money to someone you have not met in person or verified through a trusted platform.

Radbit's escrow service holds funds in a secure account until agreed milestones are met. The Trust Seal system scores businesses on compliance, financial health, and founder reputation. These tools exist precisely because the diaspora investment space needed more trust.

Getting Started Start small. Invest USD 1,000 in a verified SME or buy a small residential property. Learn the system before you commit large amounts. Build relationships with lawyers, accountants, and other diaspora investors who have done it before.

Zimbabwe needs diaspora capital. The economy cannot grow without it. But you need to invest smartly, with proper due diligence and the right protections in place. The opportunities are real, but so are the risks. Go in with your eyes open.
